The Old Testament has thirty-nine books and the New Testament has twenty-seven books. The Old Testament was originally written in Hebrew and the New testament in Greek. These books were written by a wide variety of people over a wide expanse of time. The earliest known complete list of the 27 books of the New Testament is found in a letter written by Athanasius, a 4th-century bishop of Alexandria, dated to AD. The book New Testament was first formally canonized during the councils .

Why does this Bible reading plan PDF start in John. The New Testament starts in Matthew with the four gospels. However, I’ve started this bible reading plan in John. Why. Because if you’re new to reading the Bible, then reading the gospel four times can be a little repetitive.

For example, reading the books of the New Testament in the order in which they are now assembled means starting with the Gospel of Matthew.

However, the Gospel of Matthew was not the first gospel to be written; because Matthew was regarded as the most important of the Gospels, it was placed first in the New Testament. The New Testament, as usually received in the Christian Churches, is made up of twenty-seven different books attributed to eight different authors, six of whom are numbered among the Apostles (Matthew, John, Paul, James, Peter, Jude).
